What is a Competency Statement?

Performance standards (measurement)

A Competency Statement:

Is a word or words that state what the learners need to do, know, or what attitudes they will gain as a result of taking the course.

Is measurable and observable
bullet
Begins with an action verb from the list 
bullet
Require learning at Bloom's Taxonomy application level or above
bullet
Specifies a single performance
bullet
Clear, concise, and precise statement describing the action

There is no definite number of required competencies per course,  However 4 to 10 per credit is a good rule of thumb to follow.

Interview for a job

Write a letter of application which responds to an advertisement or known employment opening

Apply the rules of precision and accuracy to measured data

Solve equations with radicals and/or exponents
bullet
Write literary analysis essays
bullet
Analyze gauge and warning light systems of the automobile

Insert graphics into an HTML document

Convert units of measure

Performance standards

The measurement or observation of the competency statement is divided into two parts:  Criteria and Conditions.

Criteria:

Describes satisfactory performance or degree of excellence the learner will demonstrate as a result of their participation in the course.
bullet
Provides the basis for judging whether or not the performance is acceptable
bullet
Check list of performances

Performance should be stated by using "action" or "doing" verbs. Learner Outcome Verbs

Criteria Examples:

You analyze literary works based on various literary interpretations
bullet
You compose topic sentences for each paragraph of an essay
bullet
You analyze the operation of the gauge and warning light systems
bullet
You resize a graphic image
bullet
You annotate key passages while reading
bullet
You apply the process for solving technical problems according to the problem solving criteria
bullet
You solve radical equations involving one variable
bullet
Cover letter is saved on a computer disk for reference and update
bullet
Problems are solved correctly
bullet
Assignment includes a reflection on learning
bullet
Assignment includes all of the work to the solution of a problem

Conditions:

Describe under what circumstances the performance will be measured
bullet
Answers the question: What will the learners do process) or submit (product) that will be assessed or evaluated.

On a written evaluation

By submitting a completed program
