Sample Design Documents*
To give you a more concrete picture of curriculum development output, these sample documents were created. These documents are presented as one style to manage the size of this handout. You will find representations of the following documents in the packet:
Learning Design (Course) Documents
Course Outline of Instruction
Reports the official, non-proprietary information about an educational offering. Used to communicate course data, prerequisites, text and supplies, intended learning outcomes, and linked outcomes.
Target Audience: Learners, Faculty, Administrators, Employers, Accrediting Agencies, Credit Transfer Receiving Organizations, and Articulation Partners
Competency
Is a major skill, knowledge, attitude or ability needed to perform a task effectively and efficiently. Competencies are intended outcomes of learning experiences. They describe WHAT the learners will be able to do. The competencies must be stated in observable, measurable terms.
Target Audience: Learners, Faculty, Administrators, Employers, Accrediting Agencies, Credit Transfer Receiving Organizations, and Articulation Partners
Performance Standards
Help define the skill described in a Competency and clarify required levels of performance. They are the observable and measurable Criteria and Conditions for performance assessment.
Target Audience: Learners, Faculty, Administrators, Employers, Accrediting Agencies, Credit Transfer Receiving Organizations, and Articulation Partners
Condition
Indicates for your learners the product or process that will be used to assess whether or not they can perform the competency.
Target Audience: Learner
Criteria
Establish expectations (specifications) by which performance is evaluated. They describe satisfactory performance and provide the basis for judging whether or not performance is acceptable. Criteria may be developed to assess a process, a product, or both.
Target Audience: Learners, Faculty, Administrators, Employers, Accrediting Agencies, Credit Transfer Receiving Organizations, and Articulation Partners
Performance Assessment Task
Describes what learners must do to demonstrate outcomes. You may create performance assessment tasks to be used at the course level or beyond the course level. You may build performance assessment tasks that target a competency, core abilities, program outcomes, general education outcomes, standards, or any combination. They list target outcomes and linked outcomes, give directions, and include a rubric or checklist.
Target Audience: Learners, Evaluators
Learning Plan
Written and given to the learners; spells out WHAT the learners will learn (outcomes), how they will demonstrate WHEN they have learned (assessment), and HOW they will learn (learning activities/strategies).
Target Audience: Learners
Teaching Plan
Based on a specific learning plan, spells out how the teacher or facilitator will guide and support learners and learning. Think of if it as directions for teaching a learning plan.
Target Audience: Teachers/Facilitators
Performance-Based Syllabus
Serves as a contract between the learners and the teacher. Includes an overview of the linked exit learning outcomes, intended course outcomes, course guidelines, grading plan, schedule and other information to guide the learning process.
Target Audience: Learners
Program Outcome Summary
Sometimes called a “Program Profile,” spells out the administrative and credentialing information for a sustained learning experience such as a program, major, or discipline thread. More importantly, this lays the foundation for program evaluation and assessment of learning outcomes. Assessment components include indirect measures, external standards, and exit learning outcomes (general education, core ability, and program), along with their indicators or criteria and direct measures of learning. Includes course configuration in a detailed list with linked outcomes or in an abbreviated table.
Target Audience: Instructional Designers, Faculty, Administrators, Employers, Accrediting Agencies, Program Approval Agencies, Funding Agencies, Credit Transfer Receiving Organizations and Articulation Partners, and Learners who are enrolled in the program (You may find an abbreviated version more relevant and useful for learners.)
Program Course List
An addendum to the Program Outcome Summary or Profile, presents course information and linked exit learning outcomes for each course in a program, major, or discipline thread.
Target Audience: Instructional Designers, Faculty, Administrators, Employers, Accrediting Agencies, Program Approval Agencies, Funding Agencies, Credit Transfer Receiving Organizations and Articulation Partners, and Learners who are enrolled in the program
