Career Counseling
|
At times, students may start college not knowing what career direction they may want to pursue. Others may find that their academic and career interests have changed or that their academic program or career situation is not meeting their needs. Our goal is to assist you to better understand your values, interests, abilities, and personality style, so you can pursue a program and career that fits YOU! We want to make sure that you decide on a career that you will feel passionate about for years to come. Career counseling consists of meeting with a professional counselor at any one of our campus locations.Your strengths, weaknesses, barriers and opportunities are explored in a supportive and confidential setting. Your counselor can listen to your situation, respond to your ideas, give you feedback, teach you strategies for making decisions and help you formulate your program and career goals. You will likely meet for one to three, 50-minute sessions with a counselor. There may be assessments conducted. Whether or not formal assessments are used, the process of career counseling will generally help clarify and identify your personal interests, abilities, and values so that programs and career options may be identified for further exploration. Counseling will focus on difficulties with decision making, self-confidence, conflicts in values or with significant others, fears, strategies for moving forward, etc. Career counseling is designed to provide more intensive assistance to those who are having significant difficulties with career or major related concerns and may have already tried other resources previously. As part of your career counseling experience, you will be given suggestions regarding where you can learn more about the majors and occupations of interest. These resources may include books and other information located within the Student Development Center, persons employed in occupations under consideration, faculty members, prospective employers, and Advising and Career Resources staff. You may also want to consider taking our Career Development course. |
