MATC Uses Second Half to Beat Holyoke CC
Posted 3-14-08 - MATC rebounded from a tough opening round loss to beat Holyoke CC by a score of 76-54 in the second round of the NJCAA National Tournament.

The game started out as an evenly matched contest, as the two teams traded baskets throughout the first half.  Second year forward Lexie Schmitgen kept the score close by scoring 12 of her 16 points in the period. Unfortunately, the WolfPack failed to capitalize on several free throw opportunities, finding themselves down by as many as eight points in the first half, and trailing by a basket at the half.

After again exchanging several baskets early in the second half, MATC turned on the defensive clamps to force Holyoke to commit 12 turnovers in the period. Sparked by a five point infusion that saw Whitney Schultz score off of an inbounds pass to herself and Alyssa Schiele drill a three-pointer, MATC never looked back as they finished the game with a 34-4 run over the final 14:06.

Schiele led the charge in the second half, where she scored 21 of her game-high 27 points.  MATC won the battle of rebounds by an overwhelming 50-29 margin.
Schiele led all scorers with 27 points, while Schmitgen and first-year guard Dana Wagner pitched in with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

MATC will face Montgomery College (15-14) from Rockville, MD, in the final round of the tournament on Saturday, March 15 at 3:00 pm.

Turnovers would prove to be the key statistic throughout the game, as MATC repeatedly turned the ball over on their way to a 34-21 halftime disadvantage.  The WolfPack came out showing their true colors in the second half, as they chiseled Brookdale’s early lead to eight points with just over six minutes remaining.

Turnovers again ended the comeback though, as MATC fell to Brookdale CC in the first game of the NJCAA National Tournament by a final score of 63-48.  Rebecca Glassbrenner led the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Alyssa Schiele and Whitney Schultz also pitched in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
