Roelke, Schmitgen, Schrandt Named to All-Conference Team
Posted 3-1-07 - Madison Area Technical College women’s basketball players Kara Roelke, Lexie Schmitgen and Stacy Schrandt were named to the 2006-07 Wisconsin Technical College Conference
all-conference team. Schrandt was a second year guard for the WolfPack while Roelke and Schmitgen are both first year players.  

MATC Falls to UW-Richland in Playoff Game
Posted 2-21-07 - In a WJCAA Playoff game, for the right to advance to the state tournament, the WolfPack Women hosted the UW-Richland Roadrunners. MATC struggled shooting and went for a long stretch without a basket in the second half. In addition, the Roadrunners outscored the WolfPack 36-8 in the paint, as MATC fell 56-42.

Former Madison East standout, Lexie Schmitgen led the WolfPack with 12 points and 10 rebounds. MATC finished the season 13-12 and runners-up in the WTCC conference under first year head coach, Jessica Pelzel.

MATC Cruises to Win Over Silver Lake
Posted 2-19-07 - On Saturday, February 17th, MATC cruised to a 54-42 win over the host Silver Lake College Lakers. The WolfPack jumped out to a 28-18 halftime lead and never looked back.

Second year player, Stacy Schrandt led all scorers with 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Former Madison East standout, Lexie Schmitgen added 14 points and 7 rebounds as MATC improved to 13-11 on the season.

MATC Loses to Western in Region Final
Posted 2-14-07 - On Wednesday, MATC traveled to La Crosse, WI, for the NJCAA Wisconsin Regional Final against co-conference champion, Western Technical College.

The WolfPack played tough in the first half as the score was knotted 32-32 at half. In the second half, the game stayed close but the lopsided free throw advantage proved costly for the WolfPack. MATC shot only two free throws all game, making one, while Western shot 13, making seven. MATC lost 57-56.

Stacy Schrandt led all scorers with 19 points while Megan O'Malley and Lexie Schmitgen pitched in with 16 and 12, respectively. Kelly McCarthy pulled down double-digit rebounds for the fourth straight game as she grabbed 11 boards to go with her four points.

WolfPack Women Cruise to Win Over MATC
Posted 2-12-07 - In the semifinal of the NJCAA Wisconsin Regional Playoffs the WolfPack Women cruised to a 77-34 win over conference opponent, Milwaukee Area Technical College.

MATC-Madison received double-doubles from two players, Kelly McCarthy and Lexie Schmitgen. Schmitgen, a former Madison East athlete, poured in 20 points and 10 rebounds while McCarthy, a former Highland athlete, added 16 points and pulled down a season team-high 22 rebounds. Second year player, Stacy Schrandt added 15 points, Andria Dorow added 10 points and Kara Roelke had 10 steals.

With the win, the WolfPack Women advance to play Western Technical College in La Crosse, WI in the NJCAA Wisconsin Regional Final on Wednesday, February 14.

MATC Loses to College of DuPage
Posted 2-9-07 - MATC lost 67-47 to the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. Kelly McCarthy and Stacy Schrandt led the WolfPack with 12 points while McCarthy added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. The loss slips the WolfPack Women to 11-10 overall.

WolfPack Women Crush Visiting Stormers
Posted 2-3-07 - The WolfPack Women crushed the visiting Stormers, 81-26 as they held Milwaukee to under twenty percent shooting for the game and forced 28 turnovers.

Stacy Schrandt led the way with 15 points and dished out nine assists. Four other WolfPack Women finished in double-figures including Alyssa Schiele, Kara Roelke, Andria Dorow and Kelly McCarthy with 13, 11, 11 and 10 respectively. Former Highland H.S. athlete, Kelly McCarthy posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. With the win, the MATC Women finished second place in conference play with a 3-1 conference mark.

MATC Dominates #3 Ranked Lady Cavaliers
Posted 1-24-07 - The MATC Women scored 42 points on 28 Western Technical College turnovers to dominate the #6 nationally ranked Lady Cavaliers. The win avenged an earlier loss in La Crosse and handed them only their second loss of the season.

Former Madison East H.S. athlete, Lexie Schmitgen had a career high 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the WolfPack. Alyssa Schiele posted her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Stacy Schrandt also reached double-figures with 11 points and seven assists. With the win, MATC improves to 2-1 in conference play.

MATC Falls Behind, Loses to the Warhawks
Posted 1-20-07 - The MATC Women fell behind early on cold shooting and turnovers against the visiting UW-Whitewater Warhawks and could never get back in the game. MATC trailed 22-41 at halftime and struggled shooting in the second half as they fell 47-69.

Alyssa Schiele led the way for the WolfPack with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and Lexie Schmitgen added 10 points. With the loss, MATC fell to 9-9 overall and will host conference leader, Western Technical College at home on Wednesday.

WolfPack Claim First Conference Win
Posted 1-18-07 - The WolfPack Women's Basketball team claimed their first conference win with a 72-48 thrashing of the host Milwaukee Area Technical College Stormers.

The WolfPack jumped out to a 36-21 halftime advantage and never looked back. Kara Roelke poured in 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Lexie Schmitgen pitched in with 16 points and nine rebounds. The WolfPack improved to 1-1 in the conference and 9-8 overall.

MATC Turnovers Prove Costly in Loss
Posted 1-14-07 - The MATC Women traveled to UW-Waukesha on January 13 to face state rival, UW-Waukesha. MATC hung with the host Cougars in the first half only trailing by six at half.

Unfortunately, the team was plaqued by turnovers, committing a season high 39 turnovers in the game. Those turnovers led directly to 36 Cougar points. In the end, the WolfPack could not overcome the miscues and lost 64-82. Alyssa Schiele was the only WolfPack player in double-figures with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field.

MATC Falls in First Conference Game
Posted 1-7-07 - On January 6, MATC traveled to La Crosse, WI, to face the #4 nationally ranked, Western Technical College Lady Cavaliers, in their first conference matchup of the season.

MATC struggled shooting as they shot just 34 percent from the field and only 7 percent from beyond the arc for the game. Despite poor shooting, the WolfPack only trailed by one point at half. In the second half, MATC continued to struggle, eventually losing 71-75 to the host Lady Cavaliers.

Lexie Schmitgen led the WolfPack in scoring for the second straight game as she poured in 21 points. Alyssa Schiele recorded her first double-double of the season scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Kara Roelke and Stacy Schrandt each added 10 points in the loss.

WolfPack Cruise to Third Straight Win
Posted 1-5-07 - The WolfPack Women won their third straight game and second Central Lakes College Tournament game in Brainerd, MN on January 4. MATC once again jumped out to a 27-18 halftime lead and cruised to a 65-45 victory over Vermillion Community College to win the tournament.

Former Madison East H.S. standout, Lexie Schmitgen led the way for the WolfPack as she recorded her third double-double of the season by pouring in 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Alyssa Schiele went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and added 12 points in the win.

MATC Claims Win Over Central Lakes
Posted 1-4-07 - The MATC Women's Basketball team won their first game of the Central Lakes College Tournament in Brainerd, MN on January 3. MATC jumped out to a 29-15 halftime advantage and held on for a 51-45 win over host Central Lakes College.

Former Poynette H.S. athlete, Kara Roelke, led all scorers with 14 points and seven steals. Lexie Schmitgen pitched in with 12 points and five rebounds.

MATC Holds Off Late Charge at Home
Posted 12-11-06 - The MATC Women's Basketball team won their third straight home contest on Monday as they held off a late charge from the visiting UW-Marathon Huskies to win, 78-70.  The WolfPack went into the locker room at the half with a 38-30 lead, only to see UW-Marathon slowly close the gap in the second half.  The Huskies closed tto within one point, 71-70, with less than a minute to go, but sophomore Stacy Schrandt hit a jumper in the lane, forcing the Huskies to foul.  MATC sealed the win at the line, hitting 14-of-20 free throws in the second half.

Former Madison East H.S. athlete, Lexie Schmitgen led all scorers with a season high 24 points on 11-for-12 shooting from the field.  Freshman Alyssa Schiele of Bath, OH, scored 16, Andria Dorow, a freshman from Wisconsin Dells, came off the bench to score 15, while Cashton native, Stacy Schrandt, scored 11 and dished out eight assists.  With the win, MATC's record improves to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in WJCAA action.

MATC Women Drop Pair at Gogebic Tourney Posted 12-11-06 - The MATC Women's Basketball team traveled to Ironwood, MI over the weekend for the McDonald's Shoot-out hosted by Gogebic Community College.

On Friday, MATC took on host Gogebic Community College.  The WolfPack were unable to get going offensively in the first half as the NCJAA Division II Lady Samsons jumped out to a 29-17 lead.  MATC fought back in the second half, but were unable to hold off Gogebic losing, 45-62.  Sophomore Stacy Schrandt, a former Cashton H.S. athlete, led all scorers with 15 points.

In their second game of the three team round-robin tournament, MATC took on another NCJAA Division II team, Bismarck State College.  The WolfPack played strong in the first half, heading into the locker down by ten, 41-51.

The Bismarck defense took over in the second half, however, as MATC was held to only 15 second half points en route to the 56-83 loss.  Freshman Lexie Schmitgen, a former Madison East H.S. athlete, led the WolfPack with 17 points, while freshman Alyssa Schiele added 13.  For her efforts over the weekend, Schmitgen was named to the All-Tournament team.

MATC Women Win Thriller at Home
Posted 12-6-06 - The MATC Women's Basketball team played host to NJCAA Division I opponent Highland Community College.  The WolfPack came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, shooting 55.6% from the field in the first half to build a 41-33 halftime lead.  The start of the second half was more of the same as MATC built its lead to 56-37.  The visiting Cougars battled back, but some clutch free throw shooting by the WolfPack secured the 72-69 win.

Freshman Alyssa Schiele of Lima, OH led all scorers with 27 points, including 10-for-13 shooting from the free throw line.  Sophomore Stacy Schrandt, a former Cashton H.S. athlete, added 18 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Freshman Lexie Schmitgen notched her second straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  With the win, the MATC women improve their record to 5-4 overall.

MATC Women Even Record With Home Win
Posted 12-4-06 - The WolfPack Women played host to Silver Lake College on Monday and cruised to victory 80-18.  The WolfPack defense forced the Lakers into 50 turnovers en route to the victory.

Freshman Kara Roelke, a former Poynette H.S. athlete, led the way for the WolfPack with 17 points and eight steals.  Freshman Alyssa Schiele of Bath, OH added 14 points while Lexie Schmitgen, a freshman from Madison East H.S., notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Alicia Baldowin gave MATC a strong effort off the bench with eight steals to go along with her eight points. With the win, MATC's overall record improves to 4-4.

MATC Women Rebound With Road Victory
Posted 11-30-06 - The MATC Women took on WJCAA opponent UW-Richland on Wednesday, November 29 in Richland Center, WI and came away with a hard-fought 50-44 victory.  The WolfPack led by only three points at the half and were down by as many as five in the second, but strong inside play and clutch free throw shooting led to the MATC comeback and eventual victory.

Freshman Alyssa Schiele, a native of Lima, OH, led all scorers with 22 points while grabbing eight rebounds.  Schiele hit 7-of-11 field goals and 8-of-11 free throws to pace the WolfPack.  Sophomore Stacy Schrandt chipped in with 10 for MATC.  With the win, MATC improves its overall record to 3-4. 

Poor Shooting Plagues WolfPack Women
Posted 11-18-06 - The MATC Women's Basketball team hosted NCJAA Division I opponent Sauk Valley Community College on Saturday, November 18.  MATC was down by only seven points at the half, but poor shooting allowed the visiting Skyhawks to pull away in the second, as the WolfPack shot under 17 percent from the field for the game, including 10 percent in the second half.

Sophomore Stacy Schrandt led MATC with 11 points, while freshman Kara Roelke added 10.  The 2-4 WolfPack will return to action after Thanksgiving, heading to UW-Richland on Wednesday, November 29.

MATC Women Drop Tough Game at Home
Posted 11-14-06 - The MATC Women's Basketball team played host to the College of DuPage on November 14 and fell victim to a strong second half performance by the visitors.  The WolfPack trailed by only two points at the half, but poor shooting by MATC allowed DuPage, ranked #10 in the nation, to cruise to victory.

MATC was led by Lexie Schmitgen with 13 points, while Alyssa Schiele chipped in with 10.  With the loss, the WolfPack Women fall to 2-3 overall.

MATC Captures Third Place in Border Battle
Posted 11-11-06 - The MATC Women defeated Gogebic Community College, 59-58, in the consolation game of the MATC Border Battle Tournament.  In a game in which fouls and turnovers plagued both teams, the WolfPack were able to hold off the NJCAA Division II Lady Samsons to grab third place in the tournament.

Alyssa Schiele led all scorers with 15 points, while Kara Roelke netted 11 for the WolfPack.  MATC improves their overall record to 2-2 on the season.

MATC Falls at Home to Rochester CTC
Posted 11-10-06 - The WolfPack Women came up short against Rochester Community & Technical College after mounting a second half comeback in the first round of the MATC Border Battle Tournament. MATC lost 60-65.

MATC's Stacy Schrandt led all scorers with 17 points, while Lexie Schmitgen added 12.  On Saturday, MATC will face off against Gogebic Community College at 10:00 AM in the consolation game at the H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium.

MATC Opens Season at Waubonsee Tourn.
Posted 11-6-06 - MATC Women's Basketball started the season 1-1 with a third place finish in the Waubonsee College Tournament in Sugar Grove, IL.

In the first game, the WolfPack faced off against a tough Carl Sandburg team.  Carl Sandburg is ranked #4 in the nation in NJCAA Division II.  MATC was unable to win the battle inside and fell to the Chargers, 48-69.  Sophomore Stacy Schrandt led the WolfPack with 13 points, while freshmen Lexie Schmitgen and Megan O'Malley added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

On Saturday, MATC took on host Waubonsee College in the consolation bracket.  The game was tight in the first half, with the score knotted up at 27-27 heading into the break.  The WolfPack came out firing in the second half, shooting over 56 percent from the field and cruising to a 70-53 win.  Freshman Kara Roelke recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 steals, while freshman Alyssa Schiele led all scorers with 21.

For their efforts, Roelke and Schiele were named to the All-Tournament Team.  MATC's overall record in the young season in 1-1.

MATC Basketball Coaches Receive Honors
Posted 10-19-06 - MATC Women's Basketball coaches Mike Mayfield and Steve Bentin were honored for their achievements at the 2006 WBCA Fall Basketball Clinic on September 29-30.

Mike Mayfield, a former Monona Grove H.S. girls coach and current MATC assistant women's coach, received a plaque for 200 wins.

Steve Bentin, MATC's former head women's basketball coach and current assistant coach, received Junior College Coach-of-the-Year honors for his team's 32-2 performance last season. The MATC Women placed third in the nation during the 2005-06 season. Bentin also received a plaque for achieving 400 wins while coaching at MATC, Madison West and Madison East.

Congratulations to Coach Mayfield and Coach Bentin on their well-deserved awards.

Jessica Pelzel Named Women's Coach
Posted 6-9-06 -Madison Area Technical College is pleased to announce Jessica Pelzel as the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach and full-time physical education instructor.  Pelzel replaces former MATC Head Coach Steve Bentin, who will remain at MATC as an assistant coach this upcoming season.

Pelzel has served as an assistant coach at the College of St. Benedict (St. Joseph, MN) for the last two years. This past year, she was a full-time instructor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science (HPERSS) at St. Cloud State University - where she also earned her Master's of Science degree. Before that, Pelzel held a graduate assistant position with the SCSU Women’s Basketball team for one year, and was a two-year graduate teaching assistant in the HPERSS department.

Pelzel was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team at Southwest Minnesota State University (Marshall, MN), where she was a three-time team captain and was named defensive player of the year her senior season. She is also a current member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and has coached many MN AAU teams over the past 10 years.

“I’m extremely excited to be part of MATC athletics,” said new MATC Head Coach, Jessica Pelzel. “I’m excited to take over a program that has been successful and my goal is keep the program among the best in the nation.”

Voelker Named First Team All-American
Posted 4-11-06 - Second year center Erin Voelker was named to the 2005-06 NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball All-American first team today, becoming the first player in school history to be receive the honor. Voelker helped lead the WolfPack Women to a third-place national finish and ranks as MATC's all-time leader in three different statistical categories.

Voelker led the team in multiple categories during the 2005-06 season, including field goal percentage

(49.6%), scoring (20.5 ppg), rebounding (11.3 rpg) and blocked shots (2.5 bpg). Voelker also received all-conference, all-state and all-region honors this season.
