Jensen, Gibbons Named All-Conference
Posted 3-1-07 - Madison Area Technical College men’s basketball players Scott Gibbons and Jason Jensen were named to the 2006-07 Wisconsin Technical College Conference all-conference team. Gibbons, a second year center was selected first team, and Jensen, a first year guard, was also selected to the first team.
MATC Loses to UW-Waukesha in Semifinal
Posted 2-24-07 -In the WJCAA State Tournament Semifinal, MATC struggled with turnovers and poor shooting while the Cougars shot well and dominated in the paint.
The WolfPack fell behind 46-28 at half and trailed by 31 points midway through the second half. In the end, MATC lost 74-58.
Patrick Macki, earned all-tournament honors, while leading MATC with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc. Former Cuba City standout, Kory Kirk pitched in with 13 points. MATC ended the season 13-15.
MATC Wins, Advance to State Tournament
Posted 2-21-07 - The MATC Men traveled to Baraboo, WI to face UW-Baraboo in the second round of the WJCAA State Playoffs. With a state tournament berth on the line, MATC jumped out to a 25-22 halftime lead.
In the second half, MATC shot over 50 percent from the field to hold off the Fighting Spirits. The WolfPack were led by three players in double-figures. Jason King recorded his seventh double-double of the season by scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Kory Kirk and David Nelson each chipped in with 11 points while Scott Gibbons grabbed 11 rebounds to go with his eight points.
MATC won 58-54, avenging an early season loss and, more importantly, advancing to the 2007 WJCAA State Tournament. The WolfPack will face UW-Waukesha at home at 8:00 PM on Saturday, February 24th.

MATC Remains Alive in State Playoffs
Posted 2-19-07 - The MATC Men beat the visiting Cavaliers, 80-77, in overtime to advance to the second round of the WJCAA State Playoffs.
Without leading scorer, Jason Jensen, who was hurt in the first half the WolfPack maintained their composure and received huge efforts from Jason King and Scott Gibbons. Former Darlington H.S. standout, Scott Gibbons led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Jason King pitched in 22 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. The WolfPack improved to 12-14 and move on to play Wednesday against a opponent yet to be determined.
MATC Falls in NJCAA First Round Game
Posted 2-12-07 - In the first round of the NJCAA Wisconsin Regional Playoffs the WolfPack Men fought back after trailing by thirteen points in the second half and were within one point with a few seconds left to go in the game.
The WolfPack could not capitalize and came up short, losing 47-50 to conference rival, Milwaukee Area Technical College. MATC-Madison was outscored 24-2 in the paint and the Stormers scored 15 points on WolfPack turnovers.
Jason Jensen led all scorers with 15 points while Scott Gibbons pitched in 10 points. Next up for the WolfPack Men is the WJCAA State Playoffs.
MATC Beats Mid-State on the Road, In OT
Posted 2-8-07 - In the final regular season game, MATC traveled to Wisconsin Rapids to play the top team in the conference, Mid-State Technical College.
Down by three points in the closing seconds of the game, first year player, Patrick Macki hit a three pointer to force the game into overtime. In overtime, Macki again came up big by feeding Jason King for a basket at the buzzer. MATC claimed a thrilling 69-68 win on the Cougars home court. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars and put MATC in sole possession of second place in the conference.
The WolfPack were led by Jason King's fifth double-double of the season as he poured in 20 points and ripped down a season high 17 rebounds. Jason Jensen and Patrick Macki each contributed in double-figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
WolfPack Men Get Big Conference Victory
Posted 2-3-07 - On Jam the Gym Day, in front of a crowd of many alumni, the WolfPack Men played inspired basketball. The men avenged an earlier loss to conference rival, Milwaukee Area Technical College with a 63-58 win. WolfPack capitalized on 16 Stormer turnovers and turned them into 17 points.
MATC-Madison was led by first year guard, Jason Jensen's 22 points. Jason King also played big as he added 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Former Darlington H.S. athlete, Scott Gibbons pulled down 10 rebounds. The win puts the WolfPack in second place in conference play with one game remaining.
WolfPack Use Second Half to Get Road Win
Posted 1-27-07 - On Saturday, MATC traveled to Menasha, WI, to face conference opponent, Fox Valley Technical College. After trailing by two points at half the MATC Men stormed back in the second half shooting a season-high 62.1 percent from the field and almost 67 percent from beyond the arc. MATC outscored the host Fighting Foxes 56-28 in the second half to claim their fourth conference win, 79-53.
Jason Jensen had 19 points and dished out six assists for the WolfPack while Jason King came back into the lineup and tallied 17 points and pulled down eight boards. MATC improved to 4-2 in conference play.
MATC Men Cruise to Conference Win
Posted 1-24-07 - The WolfPack Men cruised to their third conference win with a 74-56 thumping of the visiting Western Technical College Cavaliers.
Three MATC players reached double-figures led by guard Jason Jensen's 19 points. Former East DePere H.S. athlete, Andy Brice had a career high 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds while former Darlington H.S. standout, Scott Gibbons pitched in with 10 points and five boards. MATC improved to 3-2 in conference play.
Jason Jensen's 36 Points Not Enough
Posted 1-20-07 - Former St. Francis H.S. star and current MATC star, Jason Jensen had a college career-high 36 points but it was not enough as the WolfPack struggled shooting down the stretch to lose their second straight conference game, 74-85, to the visiting Mid-State Technical College Cougars.
Former Cuba City H.S. athlete, Kory Kirk added 10 points while Darlington's Scott Gibbons pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss. MATC falls to 7-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
WolfPack Men Fall to Conference Foe
Posted 1-18-07 - The WolfPack Men's Basketball team lost their first conference game of the season as they fell 55-65 to host Milwaukee Area Technical College. The WolfPack led by one point at half but struggled in the second half as the Stormers bench outscored the WolfPack 17-4.
Milwaukee native, Jason Jensen had 24 of MATC-Madison's 55 points to lead all scorers. Three other WolfPack players contributed with eight points. MATC-Madison fell to 2-1 in conference play and 7-12 overall.
MATC Gets Second Conference Win
Posted 1-10-07 - The MATC Men cruised to a 75-52 home win over Fox Valley Technical College. The win was the second straight conference victory for the WolfPack.
Former St. Francis H.S. star, Jason Jensen led all scorers with 24 points while Cuba City's Kory Kirk pitched in with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. Scott Gibbons pulled down 13 rebounds to record his second consecutive game with double-digit rebounds. MATC improved to 2-0 in conference play and 5-1 against state opponents.
MATC Ends Losing Skid, Wins Game
Posted 1-7-07 - The MATC Men snapped a six game losing skid and claimed their first conference win with a 79-60 rout of conference rival, Western Technical College in La Crosse, WI.
Jason Jensen, for the second straight game, led all scorers with 27 points. He also added five boards, five assists and four steals. Jason King had his second straight double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Scott Gibbons also pulled down 10 rebounds to go with his 8 points.
MATC Loses Third Game of Tournament
Posted 1-5-07 - In the final game of the Scottsdale Community College Tournament in Scottsdale, AZ, MATC fell to the NJCAA Divison II Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes 65-79. Poor shooting once again plagued the WolfPack down the stretch as they lost their sixth straight.
Jason Jensen had a big game, leading all scorers with 25 points while Jason King posted his second double-double of the tournament with 10 points and 11 rebounds. MATC will return home to play conference foe, Western Technical College, in La Crosse, WI on Saturday.
Second Half Scoring Drought Costs MATC
Posted 1-4-07 - In the second game of the Scottsdale Community College Tournament, MATC led NJCAA Division II St. Louis Community College-Meramac, 38-35, at half. Unfortunatley, once again, MATC struggled shooting and scoring points in the second stanza. The WolfPack were outscored 20-38, losing their fifth straight game, 58-73 and falling to 5-10 overall.
Jason King led the WolfPack with 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Jason Jensen pitched in 14 points and seven boards while Patrick Macki also added 11 points and seven rebounds.
MATC Falls to Scottsdale in Tournament
Posted 1-3-07 - In MATC's first game in Arizona, the WolfPack Men held tough against NJCAA Division I Scottsdale Community College as they were tied going into halftime. In the second half, MATC went cold, shooting 34 percent from the field and going 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. The WolfPack lost their fourth straight game, 59-70, to the Fighting Artichokes.
Jason Jensen led the team in scoring for the sixth straight game with 26 points and he recorded his third double-double of the season by pulling down 10 rebounds. Jason King also pitched in 11 points and grabbed a game high 14 rebounds to post his second double-double of the season. MATC fell to 5-9.
Second Half Woes Continue for WolfPack
Posted 12-14-06 -The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team lost their third straight game and their first against a state junior college opponent on Wednesday night. After trailing by only three in the first half, MATC fell 78-90 to host UW-Baraboo as they were outscored for the third consecutive game in the second half, 37-46.
Jason Jensen had a game-high 28 points on 8-for-17 shooting from beyond the arc. Chad Flentje contributed with a season-high 14 points and Patrick Macki added 12 points and five assists as the WolfPack fell to 5-8 on the season.
Second Half Troubles Lead to Two Losses
Posted 12-6-06 - The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team traveled to Ironwood, MI over the weekend to take part in the McDonald's Shoot-Out hosted by Gogebic Community College.
In the first game of the three team round-robin tournament, MATC took on host Gogebic Community College. The WolfPack started strong, building a 48-23 halftime lead. The second half was a different story as the NJCAA Division II Samsons battled back holding MATC to just 20 points after the break to get the 75-68 win over the WolfPack. Jason Jensen, a former St. Francis H.S. standout, led all scorers with 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the season. Freshmen Jason King and Tavaris Smith each added 19 and 11 points, respectively.
On Saturday, it was more of the same as once again MATC jumped out to a big first half lead only to see another NJCAA Division II opponent, Bismarck State College, battle back and take the win, 94-89. Jensen had another big day for the WolfPack as he poured in 30 points, while King was strong in the paint, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 boards for his second double-double of the season. With the losses, MATC's overall record falls to 5-7.
Hot Shooting MATC Score First Home Win
Posted 12-6-06 -The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team won for the first time at home this season, 85-56, over the visiting UW-Marathon Huskies. The WolfPack used a combination of great shooting and tough defense to build a 44-16 halftime lead. MATC shot 65.5% from the field in the first and 63% overall.
Jason Jensen had another huge day for the WolfPack, pouring in 25 first half points en route to a season high 33 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in the game. Sophomore Scott Gibbons, a former Darlington H.S. athlete, added 18 points, seven boards, four assists, and four blocks. MATC also got strong efforts from Patrick Macki (8 points, 7 assists) and Jason King (8 points, 8 rebounds). With the win, MATC improves their record to 5-5 overall and 4-0 in the WJCAA.
MATC Men Cruise to Second Straight Win
Posted 11-30-06 -The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team won their fourth straight road game of the season on Wednesday. MATC shot an impressive 61.5% from the field to down WJCAA opponent UW-Richland, 101-37, in Richland Center.
Former St. Francis H.S. athlete, Jason Jensen, led all scorers with 28 points on 12-for-16 shooting. The WolfPack got a huge 51 point effort from their bench. Freshmen Tavaris Smith and Jason King led the subs with 17 and 15 points, respectively. King, a Minneapolis native, also grabbed nine rebounds and racked up three blocks. With the victory, MATC improves its overall record to 4-5 while improving to 3-0 against state junior college opponents.
MATC Men Rebound With Big Road Win
Posted 11-21-06 -The WolfPack Men snapped a four game losing streak on the road Monday, November 20 in Janesville, WI. Like many of the WolfPack's games this season, the contest was close at the half with MATC leading by seven, 31-24. In this game, however, it was the WolfPack who seized control in the second half, scoring 49 second half points to cruise to the win, 80-47.
Freshman Tavaris Smith led a balanced scoring effort by MATC as he poured in 15 points. Minneapolis native, Jason King, returned to the lineup to notch a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. In all, every WolfPack player who entered the game scored at least two points, with eight players scoring at least six. With the win, MATC heads into the Thanksgiving break with a 3-5 overall record.
Big Second Half by Jensen Not Enough
Posted 11-15-06 -The MATC Men hosted NJCAA Division I opponent Sauk Valley Community College on Parent's Day, November 18th. MATC was unable to get much offense going in the first half as they shot just 24 percent from the field, heading into the locker room down 19-31.
Sauk Valley came out of the gate fast in the second half, extending their lead to 21 points before the WolfPack charged back, led by sharp-shooting freshman, Jason Jensen. Jensen's 25 second half points were not enough, however, as Sauk Valley held on to take the win, 70-58.
Jensen, a former St. Francis High School standout, led all scorers with 29 points, while freshman Tavaris Smith added nine for the WolfPack. MATC, whose overall record falls to 2-5, will head to Janesville, WI, on Monday, November 20, to take on UW-Rock County.
MATC Men Lose Close Game at Home
Posted 11-15-06 -The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team hosted Harper College, ranked #14 in the nation in the NJCAA Division III preseason poll, on Wednesday night at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. MATC led at the half, 33-28, but the visiting Hawks came out of the locker room and built a solid lead in the second stanza. The WolfPack, led by some clutch three-point shooting by Jason Jensen, battled back at the end but were unable to catch the visiting Hawks, falling 65-68.
Former St. Francis H.S. standout, Jason Jensen, led all scorers with 20 points, while freshmen Turrell Huff and Tavaris Smith added 12 and 10, respectively. With the loss, MATC's record falls to 2-4 overall heading into this weekend's matchup with Sauk Valley Community College.
MATC Falls To Gogebic in Border Battle
Posted 11-10-06 -The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team took on Gogebic Community College Saturday morning in the consolation game of the MATC Border Battle tournament. The WolfPack shooting hands were cold all day as they lost to the NCJAA Division II Samsons, 73-78.
Scott Gibbons led the way for MATC with 20 points, while freshman Jason Jensen continued his strong play for the WolfPack scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double. Tavaris Smith and Turrell Huff chipped in with 15 pointsand 13 points, respectively. MATC's record falls to 2-3 overall.
MATC Comes Up Short Against Rochester
Posted 11-10-06 -The WolfPack Men mounted a valient come back in the first round of the MATC Border Battle Tournament, but were unable to fend off visiting Rochester Community & Technical College, losing 73-78.
Jason Jensen led all scorers with 20 points, while Turrell Huff and Scott Gibbons chipped in with 14 and 13, respectively. MATC will take on Gogebic Community College in the consolation game of the MATC Border Battle on Saturday.
MATC Picks up Road Win at UW-Waukesha
Posted 11-9-06 -The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team faced off against UW-Waukesha and came home with a victory, 65-50. After leading by only one point at the half, the WolfPack took control in the second half behind strong second half efforts by Jason Jensen and Scott Gibbons.
Jensen led all scorers with 17 points, while Gibbons posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 boards. MATC improved their overall record to 2-1. This weekend, MATC will host the MATC Border Battle featuring four teams from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan.
MATC Places Third at Waubonsee Tourney
Posted 11-6-06 -The MATC WolfPack Men's Basketball team opened the 2006-2007 season with a thrid place finish in the Waubonsee College Tournament in Sugar Grove, IL.
In the opener, MATC faced off against highly regarded, NCJAA Division II opponent, Lincoln College. The WolfPack went into the locker room at halftime down by only five, but MATC was unable to catch Lincoln, losing 61-77. Freshman Jason Jensen had a spectacular debut for the WolfPack, finishing with 31 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Turrell Huff chipped in with 11 points.
MATC took on St. Xavier University's JV team on Saturday in the third place game of the tournament. The WolfPack shot nearly 54 percent from the field to grab thier first win of the season, 89-81. Freshmen Jason Jensen and Jason King scored 20 points each and Turrell Huff added 12. King was a force in the paint, rejecting five St. Xavier shots.
For their efforts over the weekend, Jason Jensen and Jason King were named to the Waubonsee All-Tournament Team. MATC stands at 1-1 overall in the new season.
MATC Inks Two More For Upcoming Season
Posted 8-11-06 -Jason King, a 6-foot-7 forward from Covenant Christian Academy in Marietta, GA, and Tavaris Smith, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard from Brown Deer, WI, have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Madison Area Technical College WolfPack during the 2006-07 season.
King, originally from Minneapolis, led Covenant Christian to a 20-14 record as the Cougars placed third at the NACA Division I level. He averaged double figures in both points and rebounds during regular and post-season play.
“Jason is a quality person who will be a great fit for the WolfPack and our basketball family,” said Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl. "He is very athletic, does a great job in the paint and has all the tools to continue to develop his game. We are really looking forward to working with him.”
Smith was the team captain, MVP and leading scorer - averaging 12 points per game while earning second team all-conference in the Parkland Conference - for the Falcons last season. He shot 38 percent from 3-point range and scored 28 points in the first half against Shorewood, on his way to scoring 31.
“Tavaris is a quality young person with lots of potential,” said Vesterdahl. "His athleticism, skill and ability to shoot will be great additions to our program. We have very high expectations for both of them in the classroom and as a part of our program.”
MATC Signs Two Recruits From Poynette
Posted 5-26-06 -Madison Area Technical College is pleased to announce the signings of two former basketball players from Poynette High School. David Nelson, a 6-foot-6 forward, and Andy Nelson, a
6-foot-1 guard, have each signed a National Letter
of Intent to play for the MATC men’s basketball team during the upcoming 2006-07 season.
David Nelson, a versatile forward, was a two-time second team all-conference selection. During the 2005-06 season, Nelson averaged 10 points, six rebounds and two assists per game to help lead the Indians to a second place finish in the South Central Conference.
“David’s size, strength, and work ethic will be a perfect fit for the WolfPack,” Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl said. “We needed a big guy who can play physical, run the floor and score from the block. We have very high expectations for David in the classroom and on the court.”
Andy Nelson was a first team all-conference and all-area selection for the Indians. The team MVP averaged 11 points and 4.5 rebounds per game during the 2004-05 season as Poynette claimed second place in the conference.
“Andy has the great work ethic and passion to excel that we are looking for in our student-athletes,” commented Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl. “We expect him to do a great job on the court and in the classroom. His ability to defend, score, distribute the ball and play multiple positions will be tremendous assets for our program.”
MATC Lands Two Standout Recruits
Posted 5-8-06 - Jacob Nelson, a 6-foot-4 forward from New Auburn, WI, and Turrell Huff, a 6-foot-1 guard from St. Francis, WI, have each signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Madison Area Technical College men’s basketball team during the 2006-07 season.
Nelson was a Division IV WBCA All-star, and a first team all-conference and all-county selection last season. The versatile scorer averaged 25.5 ppg and finished as the fifth leading scorer in Wisconsin according to wishoops.net - just ahead of Jason Jensen (St. Francis H.S.), who also signed to play basketball at MATC last week. Nelson also averaged three assists and just over 12 rebounds per game to lead the Trojans to a 9-5 record in the competitive East Division of the Lakeland Conference.
“Jacob is the type of quality student-athlete that we want in our program,” Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl commented. “He has tremendous potential and the work ethic to be an outstanding player. He is also a quality young man and we are very pleased that he is joining our WolfPack basketball family.”
Turell Huff, a 6-foot-1 guard from St. Francis, WI, is the second player out of St. Francis H.S. to sign on with MATC in the last week, joining forward Jason Jensen.
Huff was a first team all-conference and all-area honorable mention selection in 2003. The multi-talented guard averaged 14.5 points and four assists per game for the Mariners during the 2002-03 season.
“Turell will be a great addition to our program,” said Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl. “He can play both guard positions and is a great passer. His athleticism, skill and ability will be huge assets to our program.”
MATC Signs St. Francis Basketball Star
Posted 4-28-06 -Jason Jensen, a 6-foot-5 forward from Saint Francis High School in St. Francis, WI, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Madison Area Technical College men’s basketball team during the 2006-07 season.
Jensen was the Parkland Conference player-of-the-year, an all-area and all-state honorable mention selection last season. The prolific scorer averaged 25.4 ppg and finished as the sixth leading scorer in Wisconsin, just ahead of Jerry Smith from Wauwatosa East, according to wishoops.net
Jensen led the Mariners to their first winning season in nearly a decade in a tough Parkland Conference this year. Jensen is scheduled to play in the Division II WBCA All-Star game this summer in Madison.
"He is probably the best player to come through St. Francis," said St. Francis Head Coach John Kloppenburg. "The sky is the limit for him."
