Lanza, Voelker Lead MATC Women to Third Place Finish
Posted 3-18-06 - Looking all but finished, the MATC WolfPack Women remarkably erased a daunting six-point deficit in a span of six seconds and ended their national tournament journey with a third-place finish as they downed Ridgewater College 75-69 in the 3rd/5th place game.
As they did last night, MATC trailed for nearly the entire contest, and down by three with under 30 seconds left looked destined for a loss and a fifth place finish. But with six seconds left, Erin Voelker nailed her first three-pointer of the season, bringing MATC within three, setting up Lauren Lanza’s heroics. After an immediate foul and a timeout with four ticks left, Lanza launched a desperation shot over a Ridgewater defender from in front of the MATC bench. The three-pointer found it’s way home and knotted the game at 63 with 1.1 left on the clock, sending the awestruck WolfPack faithful into jubilation and giving the team new life.
The lead switched hands in the ensuing five minute overtime, but big shots from second year players helped turn the tide in MATC's favor. Kim Joshua made two free throws and Erin Blasco knocked down a key jumper, and when they needed it most, Erin Voelker and Lauren Lanza again hit big shots to seal the overtime win.
Voelker finished with a team-high 25 points, and Lanza netted 15. The WolfPack were a combined 10-of-13 from the line. Everyone in the game for MATC scored and contributed in other ways. Joshua had nine points and four assists and Blasco had seven points. Missie Karls scored six and pulled down four rebounds, and sisters Stacy and Kara Schrandt combined for seven points and nine boards.
Following the championship game, Lauren Lanza was selected to the all-tournament team for her outstanding play throughout the national tournament. Over three games, the second year point guard averaged 14.7 points, 5.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals a game.
Congratulations to Coach Bentin, his staff, and the team on a memorable season that saw the team post a 32- 2 overall record and a third-place national finish. A special thanks to all the parents and fans. What a season it was!
MATC Loses Heartbreaker to Mohawk
Posted 3-17-06 - With just under a minute remaining in the today's second round game, second year forward Cassie Paulsen hit a clutch 3-point basket to tie the game at 64. Mohawk Valley Community College (32-0) answered with two quick buckets and a pair of free throws to dash MATC’s national title hopes as the WolfPack Women fell in the second round of the 2006 NJCAA Division III Women’s National Basketball Tournament, 64-70.
MATC will play its final game of the season on Saturday at 6:00 PM against Ridgewater College, with a national third place finish on the line.
MATC got off to an uncharacteristically slow start and found themselves down 27-33 at halftime. Center Erin Voelker got in foul trouble early, picking up two quick fouls in the game’s opening minutes and had to sit out a large portion of the first half before getting called for her third before halftime. She was not alone in foul trouble, and both teams found themselves battling inconsistent calls all game. It factored significantly, as Voelker and guards Lauren Lanza and Erin Blasco each fouled out in the second half – while guards Kim Joshua and Missie Karls were on the brink with four of their own.
The WolfPack Women (31-2) gave it their all, but in the end, foul trouble, turnovers and an off shooting night resulted in the team’s second loss of the season and marked a loss to Mohawk Valley CC in the national tournament for the second straight year.
Kim Joshua led the way with 15 points. Cassie Paulsen added 14 and Erin Voelker had 10 points in a season-low 22 minutes played. Saturday's opponent, Ridgewater College (21-8) fell to Monroe College in Friday's second round, after topping College of Dupage in the opening round.
