MATC Falls to #2 Minneapolis in Semifinal

winning six consecutive postseason games, MATC ran into a buzz-saw
in the #2 team in the country, Minneapolis Community & Technical
Colelge. It also didn't help that MATC struggled shooting as
they shot just under 34% for the game including 3-for-18 from
beyond the arc.
MATC lost 57-75 to bow out of the NJCAA Region XIII Tournament.
Danny Armelin led the WolfPack in scoring for the third straight
game as he had 17 points and was the only WolfPack player in
double-figures. Mike Wendorf pitched in with nine points. The
state champion WolfPack ended their 2005-06 season with a 22-14
overall record.
MATC Claims First State Title
Since 1999

won their sixth consecutive postseason game, but more importantly
claimed their first WJCAA State Basketball title since 1999
with their 70-66 win over conference rival Mid-State Technical
College.
MATC jumped out to a 36-31 halftime lead and then
fought hard in the second half to claim the their second
straight postseason victory over the conference champion Cougars.
The WolfPack were led by all-tournament guard Danny Armelin's
17 points including key free throws down the stretch. Former
Madison East athlete, Tim Schafel added 15 points while all-tournament
and former Stoughton athlete, Mike Wendorf added 10 points and
Rykker Erickson contributed 11 points.
The state title win is the first since the 1998-99 season when
current head coach Scot Vesterdahl won back-to-back state titles.
Congratulations to the MATC WolfPack Men on the 2006 WJCAA State
Title.

Beat UW-Manitowoc in Semifinal
Posted 2-25-06 - In a tight,
back-and-forth game the MATC Men won their fifth consecutive postseason
game posting a 75-71 win against the defending state champion UW-Manitowoc
Blue Devils. With the semifinal victory, MATC advances to the WJCAA
State Final against Mid-State Technical College at 2:00 PM on Sunday.
In a game filled with lead changes and three-point shooting,
MATC came out on top with the help of four players scoring in
double-figures. Danny Armelin led the way for the WolfPack with
16 points as Mike Wendorf, Justin Hustad and Josh Baysinger contributed
15, 14, and 13, respectively. Rykker Erickson once again
played big in the middle pulling down 13 rebounds to go with
his eight points.
The MATC Men will face Mid-State Technical College for the fourth
time this season on Sunday at 2:00 PM in the WJCAA
State Tournament Final. The WolfPack are 1-2 against the
conference champion Cougars, but in their most recent contest
MATC won 63-61 in Wisconsin Rapids for the NJCAA WI Regional
Final.

Posted 2-22-06 - The
MATC Men won their 20th game of the season and their seventh
consecutive as they won a hard fought game with UW-Rock
County, 77-61.
Former Poynette H.S. athlete, Justin Hustad led all scorers
with a season-high 24 points. Danny Armelin added 22 points and
seven rebounds while Rykker Erickson pitched in 16 points and
six rebounds.
With the win, the MATC Men advance to the WJCAA
State Tournament hosted at MATC. The WolfPack are scheduled
to play at 6:00 PM versus UW-Manitowoc in the first of two
men's semifinals on Saturday.

Wins Playoff Game Against Baraboo
Posted 2-20-06 - The MATC
Men won their first round of the WJCAA State Playoffs with a 90-57
win over the visiting UW-Baraboo Fighting Spirits. The WolfPack
broke the game open in the second half as they shot over 83% from
beyond the arc and almost 55% from the field, outscoring UW-Baraboo
49-22 in the second half.
Former Madison LaFollette athlete and current MATC center, Rykker
Erickson had 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting to lead all scorers.
Justin Hustad, Josh Baysinger and Danny Armelin pitched in 16,
12, and 11 respectively while Scott Gibbons pulled down 11 rebounds.
With the win, MATC advances to the second round of the WJCAA State Playoffs to face the winner of UW-Rock County and Western WI Technical
College on Wednesday, February 22nd at MATC at 7:30 PM.
MATC Stuns Mid-State in WI Rapids

just inside the arc, Danny Armelin hit the game-winning shot
with two seconds remaining as the MATC Men stunned host Mid-State
Technical College with a 63-61 upset win after losing to
the conference champs twice during the regular season.
MATC controlled the action the majority of the game, but Mid-State
took the lead about midway through the second half and seemed
poised to win their third game of the year against MATC. But
Danny Armelin and the WolfPack simply would not be denied. Armelin
dazzled as he knocked down numerous acrobatic shots and kept
MATC in the game by getting to the foul line in the second half.
The second year guard accounted for over half of the WolfPack
points as he poured in a game-high and season-high 32 points.
Armelin was not alone. The WolfPack collectively set the tone
early with great intensity and execution. Rykker Erickson and
Justin Hustad each tallied eight points and Scott Gibbons grabbed
seven boards. With the win, MATC advances to host the 2006 NJCAA
Region XIII Tournament on Friday & Saturday, March 3-4.

Men Top Stormers to Advance

MATC men's basketball team endured lead changes, momentum
swings and prevented MATC-Milwaukee from scoring a go-ahead
basket with just seconds remaining,
as the WolfPack held on for the 68-67 win. With the win,
the MATC Men advance to the final round of the NJCAA
WI Regional Playoffs.
Each time the WolfPack went on a run,
the Stormers answered with a run of their own. When MATC-Milwaukee
grabbed the lead in the second half, forward Mike Wendorf and
guards Justin Hustad and Danny Armelin rose to the occasion,
knocking down huge shots to put the WolfPack ahead for good.
Hustad was 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, as he finished with a
team-high 18 points. Armelin had 17 and Wendorf pitched in 15.
Scott Gibbons grabbed 10 boards and dished out four assists.
The
WolfPack will play at Mid-State Technical College on Wednesday
at 7:30 PM. Mid-State defeated Waukesha County Technical College
87-62 in the other semifinal game.
WolfPack Face MATC-Milwaukee Tonight
Posted 2-13-06 - The MATC men's basketball team and Milwaukee Area Technical College face eachother for the third time this season when the WolfPack host the Stormers in the opening game of the NJCAA WI Regional Playoffs tonight at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium at 7 PM.
The WolfPack won both games against the Stormers this season, winning on the road on January 14th, 71-62, and again at home on February 1st, 70-54. Including their win over the Stormers in mid-January, the WolfPack finished the regular season having won eight out of their last nine games.
As MATC enters the postseason tonight, here are some of the players that led the WolfPack statistically during the 2005-06 regular season:

WolfPack Win Second Against Western
Posted 2-9-06 - The WolfPack Men claimed their sixth conference win and second against Western Wisconsin Technical College this season, as they survived a second half rally to win 69-66. MATC and Western both struggled from the field, each shooting 39%, but MATC gave themselves second chances by offensively outrebounding the Cavaliers 20 to seven, and 53-36 overall.
Danny Armelin led the WolfPack with 24 points and added four assists. Former Madison LaFollette H.S. athlete, Rykker Erickson had 12 points and Mike Wendorf (Stoughton H.S.) added 11. Justin Hustad (Poynette H.S.) pulled down 11 rebounds, including seven key offensive boards. The win improves MATC to 16-13 overall, 14-2 in the WJCAA and 6-2 in conference play.
MATC Men Escape Baraboo With a Win
Posted 2-1-06 - The WolfPack Men won a close game on the road against UW-Baraboo on Monday, 66-64. Unlike their first game against the Fighting Spirits in early December, when MATC cruised to a 74-55 win behind a strong start to the second half, MATC was in a dogfight throughout.
Danny Armelin and Mike Wendorf paced the WolfPack with 12 points each and Scott Gibbons added nine as MATC improved to 15-13 overall and 13-2 against state junior college opponents.

Men claimed their fifth conference win and second against MATC-Milwaukee
as they cruised to a 70-54 win. MATC led 37-29 at half and kept
the Stormers from getting within reach as MATC shot over 44% from
beyond the arc and crashed the boards, outrebounding the them 54-38.
Danny Armelin scored 19 points to lead the WolfPack and former
Madison LaFollette H.S. athlete, Rykker Erickson had his first
double-double of his career as he had 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Scott Gibbons got back into his rebounding ways as he pulled
down 13 rebounds. MATC improved to 14-13 overall and 5-2 in conference
play.
MATC Men Fall to Mid-State Tech
Posted 1-30-06 - Strong efforts from guards Danny Armelin and Justin Hustad were not enough Saturday, as the WolfPack's second half comeback bid fell short to host Mid-State Technical College, 72-76.
Armelin filled out the stat sheet, making 10-of-19 shots, dishing out five assists and snatching nine steals. He finished with 25. Justin Hustad was also sharp, tallying 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting as he drained four 3-pointers and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. MATC forced 24 Mid-State turnovers, but were outmatched on the boards. The WolfPack trailed by nine at the half, but outscored the Cougars 46-41 in the final stanza.
MATC Men Breach .500, Win Fifth Straight
Posted 1-25-06 - MATC won its fifth straight game over state junior college competition, rallying from a four point halftime deficit to capture a 72-66 victory over Waukesha County Technical College.
Danny Armelin led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting, including knocking down four three-pointers. Also in double figures was forward Mike Wendorf, who had 12. The win improves the WolfPack to 13-12 overall, 11-1 in WJCAA play and 4-1 in the conference.

Men Get Back to .500, Win Fourth

1-23-06 - MATC got back to .500 with their fourth straight
win over a Wisconsin junior college opponent. MATC is now 12-12
overall with a 81-46 thrashing of the visiting UW-Rock County
Rattlers.
MATC forced 26 Rattler turnovers and dished
out 19 assists in the win. Texas A&M-Kingsville transfer,
Danny Armelin, had 15 points to lead all scorers while former
Darlington H.S. standout, Scott Gibbons, recorded his fifth
double-double of the season scoring 14 points and pulling
down 12 rebounds. Tim Shafel also added 14 points in the
win.

Victorious over Western WI Tech
Posted 1-21-06 - Point guard Danny Armelin was
7-of-14 from the field and perfect from the line, leading MATC past visiting
conference foe Western Wisconsin Technical College on Saturday, 81-59. MATC jumped
out to a 45-27 halftime lead, and continued to outscore the Cavaliers in the
sceond half.
In addition to Armelin's team-high 22 points, center
Rykker Erickson scored 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting, and guard
Tim Shafel finished with 13. The WolfPack
finished the game shooting 51.5 percent as they improved to
11-12 having won three straight. MATC is now 3-1 in the conference
and 9-1 in WJCAA play.

Gets Win Against UW-Richland
Posted 1-18-06 - Despite shooting
only 33% from the field, MATC was able to force 24 turnovers
and get away with a 53-37 win at home against the UW-Richland
Roadrunners.
Danny Armelin led MATC with 13 points and Scott
Gibbons pitched in 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds in
the victory. The WolfPack creeped closer to the .500 mark improving
their record to 10-12 on the season.

Men Win Big Conference Game
Posted 1-14-06 - MATC won their
second conference game of the season with a hard fought 71-62
win against Milwaukee Area Technical College in Milwaukee, WI.
The WolfPack saw their 41-27 halftime advantage vanish when the
Stormers evened the score at 53, but MATC's Danny Armelin responded with a
three point play and MATC held on from there. Armelin was among five players
in double figures, as he tallied a team-high 13 points. Scott Gibbons posted
a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. With the win, the WolfPack
improve to 2-1 in conference play.

Rally Falls Short in Second Half
Posted 1-11-06 - MATC fell
behind in the first half to visiting conference rival Mid-State
Technical College as the Cougars shot over 73% from the field.
Trailing by 15 points at half MATC cut into the deficit in
the second half, outscoring the Cougars 33-29. The WolfPack
run fell short as MATC lost their first game to a state junior
college opponent and dropped their first conference game,
64-75.

Men Get Win in Conference Opener

21 Owls turnovers and had four players in double-figures as they
claimed their first conference win over Waukesha County Technical
College, 78-55. MATC broke the game open in the first half as
they shot over 50% from the field and outscored the visting Owls
41-21. In the second half, MATC cruised to their sixth consecutive
win over a state opponent.
Danny Armelin led the WolfPack in scoring with
16 points for the third consecutive game in his third game of
the season. Armelin went 7-for-7 from the line and also pulled
down eight rebounds. Former Madison East H.S. athlete, Tim Shafel
added 15 points while Kory Kirk and Rykker Erickson each scored
11 points in the conference win.

I Eastern Arizona
Posted 1-3-06 - MATC
played tough and only trailed by three points going into half
against a NJCAA Division I Eastern Arizona College team. In
the second half, the WolfPack fell behind by 12 but rallied
back in the final five minutes to tie the game. The Gila Monsters
hit some key shots down the stretch and MATC shot just 11 free
throws to Eastern Arizona's 27. In the end, MATC fell 71-76.
Danny Armelin led MATC in scoring for the second straight game as he poured in 19 points and dished out five assists. Scott Gibbons recorded a double-double as he scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high 14 boards. Justin Hustad added 12 points.
Danny Armelin Leads MATC to Win
Posted 12-30-05 - Playing his first game of the MATC Men's Basketball season, guard Danny Armelin, a transfer from Texas A&M-Kingsville, made his presence felt. He led the team with 17 points and hit four key free throws inside thirty seconds left to go to seal the win for the WolfPack. It was MATC's first win of the three-day Scottsdale CC Tournament in Scottsdale, AZ.
Danny Armelin hit 6-of-11 from the field and was 4-for-4 from the line in his first game of the season. Former Madison East H.S. athlete, Tim Shafel added 12 points in the win. MATC won their first game of the last four and improved to 7-10 overall.
Second year guard, Justin Hustad, received second team all-tournament honors as he scored 43 points in three Scottsdale CC Tournament games.
MATC Struggles in Second Tourney Loss
Posted 12-29-05 - MATC lost their second game of the Scottsdale Tournament as they struggled shooting and gave up 30 points to Centralia College's Marcus Hinton. MATC managed only 21 points in the first half as they shot just 23%. The WolfPack made a second half run and pulled the game within five points but never got any closer. MATC fell 53-68 to Centralia College (WA).
Justin Hustad once again led MATC in scoring with 19 points before fouling out of the game. Mike Wendorf and Scott Gibbons each grabbed six rebounds and scored in double-figures as MATC lost their third straight. MATC will play Yavapai College (AZ) at 2:00 PM on Friday in the 7th/8th place game.
MATC Men Rally But Lose to Scottsdale CC
Posted 12-28-05 - MATC rallied from 11 points down at half, outscoring the host NJCAA Division II Scottsdale Aritchokes 28-26 in the second half. Unfortunately, MATC struggled from the free throw line down the stretch, going 15-29 for the game. The WolfPack could not fully close the gap and lost 55-64 in the first round of the Scottsdale CC Tournament.
Former Poynette H.S. athlete, Justin Hustad led the WolfPack with 15 points and five assists. Mike Wendorf and Tim Shafel each contributed in double-figures with 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Scott Gibbons pulled down 12 rebounds in the loss. MATC will play Centralia College (WA) at 4:00 PM on Thursday.

Posted 12-22-05 - MATC had a four point lead with around 40 seconds left to go in the game when the host Riverland CC Blue Devils rattled off five unanswered points to hand MATC a 55-56 loss in Austin, MN. The game was tight throughout as Riverland led by one at half.

MATC Earns Split At Gogebic CC Tourney
Posted 12-19-05 - MATC lost a close game to
Itasca Community College in the opening round of the Gogebic CC Tournament before
downing host Gogebic CC in the consolation game to earn a weekend split.
Jake Severson, a former Madison East H.S. athlete, led the WolfPack with 12 points, shooting 50 percent from the field in the opening game versus Itasca. MATC established a slim 26-23 half time lead, but was unable to hold on as they lost 50-53.
MATC played well the following day against D-II Gogebic Community College, outscoring the Samsons 37-24 in the second half en route to a decisive 68-52 win. Justin Hustad connected on 9 of 14 shots, and finished with a team-high 19 points. Tim Shafel contributed 12 points, and Scott Gibbons netted nine and grabbed eight rebounds as MATC improved to 6-7 with the win. Justin Hustad, Tim Shafel and Scott Gibbons were selected to the all-tournament team.

third straight and improved to 5-6 as they beat visiting Fox Valley
Technical College 52-41. MATC pushed its record against state junior
college opponents to 5-0 and was led by former Stoughton H.S. athlete,
Mike Wendorf's 11 points. Former Poynette H.S. athlete, Justin
Hustad pitched in 10 points in the win.

WolfPack Beat UW-Marathon
Posted 12-8-05 - MATC got their
second win in as many nights as they rallied from behind to beat
the host UW-Marathon Huskies, 67-63.
MATC trailed by one point at halftime and outscored the Huskies
33-28 in the second half behind point guard, Bryan Ross' season-high
16 points. Ross was 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Tim Shafel
and Justin Hustad each contributed in double-figures as MATC
shot almost 50 percent from the field and almost 60 percent from
three-point territory.
MATC Gets Win at Home Against Baraboo

cruised to a 74-55 win on the shoulders of talented 6-8 freshman,
Scott Gibbons, 20 point and 14 rebound double-double.
MATC took
control of the game in the second half as the outscored the
visiting Fighting Spirit 44-31 down the stretch, shooting 50%
from the field. Rykker Erickson pitched in 11 points on 5-for-7
shooting from the field. With the win, MATC improved to 3-6 and
3-0 against state junior college opponents.

Posted 12-5-05 - MATC's recent shooting problems continued Saturday, as the WolfPack shot a season-low 26 percent from the field in a 46-57 road loss against Kishwaukee College (IL).
Darlington native Scott Gibbons had 10 points and eight rebounds, and guard Tim Shafel (Madison East) scored 10. Second year center Rykker Erickson collected a team-high 10 rebounds. In addition to shooting just 14 of 53, MATC was outscored 30-4 in bench points, as the WolfPack dropped to 2-6 overall.
Men's Shooting Struggles Continue in Loss
Posted 11-21-05 - Down by five at halftime, MATC could not overcome its recent shooting woes, and could not make a comeback against Division I opponent Sauk Valley, losing 56-72 on Saturday in Dixon, IL. The WolfPack shot 33 percent in the contest, while the Skyhawks shot 47 percent.
Scott Gibbons, of Darlington, WI, was 7 of 10 from the field, and finished with a 14 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs. The next highest scorer for MATC was Andrew Janssen, who contributed nine points. Tim Shafel and Justin Hustad had eight points apiece. Going into the game, Sauk Valley had been averaging 92 points per game. The loss drops MATC to 2-5 overall.
Offense Ignites MATC To Win
Posted 11-14-05 - On the heels of a couple closely contested games that didn't finish as the WolfPack would have liked, MATC came out firing against UW-Richland on Wednesday, building a comfortable 47-20 halftime lead en route to an 83-49 win. MATC shot an impressive 50 percent from the field, while making 10 of 21 three pointers, and finished with 52 rebounds, over twice as many as the Roadrunners.
Andy Nelson led a balanced, potent offensive effort, scoring 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Newcomer Bryan Ross, a standout player from the MATC men's soccer team, scored 15 points in his first game. Tim Shafel also reached double figures, with 11, as MATC improved to 2-4 overall, and 2-0 in WJCAA games.
MATC Men Drop Two Tournament Games
Posted 11-14-05 - The MATC Men played well, but came up short in both their games this weekend, losing to Rochester Community & Technical College and Gogebic Community College in the WolfPack Classic Tournament in Madison. MATC forward Jon Krogman, returning for his second year with MATC after playing for the WolfPack during the 1998-99 season, was named to the all-tournament team.
In the opening game against eventual tournament winner Rochester CTC, guard Josh Baysinger was the lone MATC player in double figures, scoring 11 in a 65-52 loss in which the WolfPack shot 38% from the field.
Saturday's consolation game versus Gogebic CC went down to the wire, but strong efforts from guards Andy Nelson and Justin Hustad were not enough as Gogebic edged MATC, 56-53. Nelson and Hustad each had 13 points, but MATC again struggled offensively, shooting 33%.

Lose Two at Waubonsee Tourney
Posted 11-9-05 - MATC faced some stiff competition this past weekend, losing twice at the Waubonsee College Tournament in Sugar Grove, IL. On Friday, MATC lost 44-69 to Division II powerhouse Lincoln College, ranked seventh in the country. Lincoln set the tone in the first half, outscoring the WolfPack 36-15. Second year forward Mike Wendorf led the WolfPack with 11 points.
In Saturday's consolation game, Scott Gibbons recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds in a 53-60 defeat to Saint Xavier University JV. First year guard Andy Brice had 14 points for the WolfPack. Gibbons and Brice were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
MATC Opens 2005-06 Season With a Win
Posted 11-2-05 - It is already that time of year again... The MATC Men's Basketball team played their first game of the 2005-06 season on Wednesday night in Janesville, WI. MATC trounced the host Rattlers 100-55 as all thirteen WolfPack players scored. Second year player from Madison LaFollette H.S., Rykker Erickson, led the way with 18 points while first year players, Andrew Jansen and Kory Kirk had 13 and 11 points, respectively. |
