MATC Places Three Players on Northwoods
League Rosters

players will be on Northwoods League rosters as the season
begins today.
The Madison Mallards signed MATC lefthanded

opening day. Corning has been a dominating pitcher for MATC
the last two seasons.

MATC lost all four games. MATC will be in action again
on their spring trip on March 13 when they face Lake
Sumpter Community College in Leesburg, FL. 2004 Baseball Season Outlook
Posted 11-20-03 - The
2004 MATC baseball team is looking to return to championship
form after posting a 23-22 overall record in the 2003 campaign,
disappointing by MATC baseball standards. Optimism runs
high after a very successful fall season. The team features
a mix of 9 talented returning players and a recruiting
class of 15 newcomers. The
coaching staff saw marked improvement in all areas of
the game in the fall practice segment of the season and
is encoured by the strength gains made in the weight
room during the off-season strength conditioning segment. Spring practice began the second week of January
with the 2004 season kicking off at the Linclon Trail (IL)
Tournament the last weekend in February. The team then
heads to Orlando, Florida on March 11 for a 10-day spring
training trip. The WolfPack will be lead by sophomore tri-captains
Mike Goetz, outfield, Kelby Mack, pitcher, and Jeremy McGinn,
shortstop. The three captains exhibited outstanding leadership
throughout the fall both on and off the field. The pitching staff has
the potential to be outstanding with returning letterwinnners
and projected starters, Mack, Rick Cavaiani, Shaun Corning,
and Nate Schwartz, along with returning reliever Chris Koepke.
Add newcomers Dan Plens, Matt Anderson, Lee Waechter, Toby
Soley and Ryan Vanderplus and the potential is there to have
an excellent pitching staff. The outfield should
be strong with returning starters Goetz and Nick Hein, and
talented newcomer Dan Nelson. Several other players may see
time in the outfield as well. The
infield has been re-vamped and showed tremendous improvement
over the course of the fall. Maginn will be the starter
at shortstop with Matt Holzhueter as the back up. Freshman
Tyler Schill, an outstanding defensive player, will be
at second base. and first year players Matt Holzhueter
and Troy Vesling will man third base. First base is up
for grabs with Kyle Meyer (injury redshirt last season),
Joel Hoberg and Vesling challenging for playing time.
The catching duties will be an area
of intense competition and will be handled by newcomers Mike
Piper, Kevin Wagner, Joel Hoberg and Jon Deck. All four will
see time early in the season and will challenge for the starting
spot.
