Jessica Pelzel started as the MATC Head Women’s Basketball Coach during the 2006-07 season. In just her second season with the program Pelzel led her squad to a 29-7 overall record. In the process, her team claimed the Wisconsin Technical College Conference Championship, the WJCAA state title, the NJCAA Region XIII Championship, and a fourth place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament held in Utica, NY.

Pelzel served as an assistant coach at the College of St. Benedict (St. Joseph, MN) for the two years prior to coming to MATC. This past season, she was a full-time instructor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science (HPERSS) at St. Cloud State University (SCSU) - where she also earned her Master's of Science degree. Before that, Pelzel held a graduate assistant position with the SCSU Women’s Basketball team for one year, and was a two-year graduate teaching assistant in the HPERSS department.

Pelzel was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team at Southwest Minnesota State University (Marshall, MN), where she was a three-time team captain and was selected defensive player-of-the-year her senior season. She is also a current member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and has coached numerous Minnesota AAU teams over the past 10 years.

In addition to her coaching duties, Pelzel is also a full-time physical education instructor at MATC.

Mike Mayfield started as assistant coach for the Madison Area Technical College women’s basketball team in 2006.

Prior to MATC, Mayfield coached for 23 years at Monona Grove High School compiling an overall record of 243-153. For the first 17 years he coached the freshman before taking over as head coach during the 2001-02 season. His 2002-03 team claimed the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Regional title.

Mayfield grew up in Washington, D.C. He attended Chamberlain Vocation High School where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He earned team MVP and team captain honors in his senior season. After high school, Mayfield enrolled at the College of Eastern Utah in, Price, Utah to play basketball. After two years at the college he transferred to Norland College in Ashland, WI playing two more years before earning his bachelors degree in Geology and Geography.

In addition to coaching basketball, Mayfield has served as a Vocational/Educational assistant at Monona Grove High School for the past ten years. He and his wife Lisa live in Madison and have three children.
