Gibson, Virginia
Madison
Virginia Gibson, age 84, passed away as a result of a stroke on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the Oakwood Nursing Home, where she had resided for the last two years. Her friends are grateful for the care she received there. Virginia will be long remembered for her distinguished career as an educator and for her twin passions of art and music. Virginia earned a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Chicago in 1947 and taught at a variety of high schools and colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin, both as a member of the Dominican Order and as a lay person. She will be especially remembered for her tenure at Edgewood and at MATC, from which she retired in 1990 after more than 20 years. Virginia was first and foremost an intellectual. She had deeply felt opinions about all things cultural. She traveled extensively to experience and analyze the art, architecture, and music of every corner of the globe. She was especially devoted to searching out the most innovative performances of opera, theater and classical music. Her friends will miss the energy and intellectual rigor of her discourses on her favorite subjects. Virginia was very clear that there be no formal funeral service at her passing.
