Study Looking for Students
Wed, 10/27/2010 - 11:50 — kfoster3
Madison Area Technical College needs 20 students to conduct a study on October 30 and 31 through distributing literature to 6,000 Madison households. We will offer a $60 per day stipend plus lunch for this project.
Students must sign up today!
The study will:
- Study voter motivation for a University of Chicago/University of California-Berkeley/Madison Area Technical College project.
- Remind potential voters of the Madison Area Technical College referendum.
- Urge potential voters to vote.
- Remind potential voters that election day is November 2.
Students must be reliable so other members of the team can count on them this Saturday and Sunday. Names and email addresses of reliable students should be submitted to ethornley[at] matcmadison [dot] edu (Erin Thornley), Public Affairs and Government Relations Manager by the end of the day today, Wednesday, October 27.
Students will meet in the Truax Administrative Parking Lot at 8 a.m. and will board a van to be driven the ward in which they will drop. They will be given specific instructions and will work with a researcher all day. Students will be returned to the campus around 5 p.m.
The Project
University of Chicago Department of Economics Professor John List, University of California at Berkeley Associate Professor of Economics Stefano DellaVigna and University of California at Berkeley Associate Professor of Economics Ulrike Malmendier, are conducting a study of the effectiveness of efforts to encourage people to vote on the upcoming referendum to fund the Madison Area Technical College Smart Community Plan. The message delivered to residents across three specific wards in the Madison area will encourage them to vote, and to notify the residents that a referendum to fund Madison Area Technical College will be on the November 2 ballot. Three different messages will be distributed. None of the messages will include a request to vote for or against the measure. The study will provide the researchers with a better understanding of Get-Out-The-Vote efforts around the upcoming referendum.
A few of Professor List's Research Professionals will be in Madison for the study. They will help run a door-to-door experiment on October 30 and 31 to better understand the motivations of voting. Madison College students are asked to team up with the researchers to conduct this study. Students who participate in this study may be asked to participate again for the second part of the study that will be conducted after the November 2 election.
Madison Area Technical College
The study will require 10 students on Saturday, October 30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 students on Sunday, October 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to drop 6,000 pieces of literature under the direction of Professor List's Researchers. If the same 10 students want to do the drop both days that would be fine. It is Critical that the students are reliable. This is a team project so those who don't participate as promised create more work for other people on the team. The Researchers will treat the students to lunch each day.
