Gilbertson, Robert Palmer
MADISON
Robert Palmer Gilbertson, age 71, of Madison, passed away in his sleep on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009. "Bob" was born in Marinette on May 1, 1938, to Palmer Martin Gilbertson and Margreth Elizabet "Betty" Jaeger-Gilbertson. After graduation from high school he joined the Army where he was quickly transferred to Germany and placed in intelligence. On completion of his duties, Bob returned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1959 where he met Sue and their lives began.
Bob began studying engineering and history, but found education to be his calling. He received two master's degrees in history and education administration. Bob briefly taught history at Wisconsin Heights High School and then at Madison Area Technical College. He soon moved on to administration where he really made an impact. As the head of development for the Wisconsin Technical College System Foundation he coordinated many programs. In the last few years, Bob devoted his time to the WTCSF Renewable Energy Summit. As important as his professional life was, his family meant the world to him. Bob and Sue traveled all over the country, going to as many great restaurants as possible. They were each other's biggest support system. More often than not, the kids would be along for their adventures. He was involved with Madison Youth Hockey, Soccer and Little League in the '70s and '80s for his boys, and would have done anything for his daughter who will always be his little girl. A voracious reader, an admirer of music, good food, fishing, his tropical fish tanks and a lifelong Packers fan. Bob was a kind and gentle soul who loved to laugh, tell a horrible pun and spend time with family, friends and his dogs with which he shared a special connection. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Susanne "Sue" (Begg) Gilbertson; sons, Rob and Scott (wife, Betsy); daughter, BethAnne; grandson, Kiefer; uncle, Frederick "Fritz" Jaeger; extended family; and many friends and coworkers. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Peter Martin "Marty" Gilbertson; lifelong friend, John Bell; and his beloved dogs, Gaye, Kippy and Rose. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at 5:30 p.m. at the RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., with the Rev. Jerry Amstutz officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday at the funeral home from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service. "Goodbye Poppy, we love and miss you."
