RecycleMania: Week 5
Tue, 02/07/2012 - 11:47 — wbessette
Recylemania is brought to you by the Madison College Sustainability Alliance (MESA). It's a campaign to increase recycling and reduce landfill waste at the College.
• Increase awareness of waste generated on campus
• Introduce innovative waste diversion ideas for the campus
(Athletic Shoe Recycling Program, etc.)
• Increase awareness of how to recycle and reduce landfill waste
Week 5 Notes:
This is the last week of our recycling campaign. We hope that you have begun a new habit of recycling in your daily life and on campus! We want to reduce the amount of garbage that goes to the landfill and promote environmental sustainability and reuse. You can do this by joining the Madison area organization—Freecycle.org. The non-profit organization has kept more than 500 tons of waste from going to the landfills each day. You can give and get free stuff by signing up at this network.
Remember, what plastic bags pollute. It's estimated that between one-half to one trillion plastic shopping bags are used world wide annually but only 1 percent are being recycled. Please recycle these at home or at least keep using them until they are exhausted. Instead use reusable grocery bags or totes for your shopping.
Remember to prevent wasted paper by posting your syllabus into Blackboard. Donate food and reusable clothes and household goods to local charities. Switch from using paper plates, cups and plastic tableware to washable tableware and utensils. Bring your own water bottle instead of buying bottled water.
Remember to recycle! Look for the blue recycling containers in each office and classroom and the containers with the recycling logo on the sides. Please notice our new Single Stream Recycling Flyers that are attached to the recycling containers. At the College, we have single stream recycling where all paper, cardboard, magazines, cans, glass and plastic bottles are recycled in one container.
Thank you for your participation in Recyclemania for 2012!
