Obituary for Edmund J. "Ed" Scanlon

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Madison College retiree Edmund J. "Ed" Scanlon has passed away last week. Here's his obituary:

Edmund J. "Ed" Scanlon, age 92, died on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Waunakee Manor.

He was born Dec. 14, 1918, in Oregon, WI, the son of Dominic and Sarah (Murphy) Scanlon. He graduated from Madison East High School. Ed was
united in marriage to Elizabeth "Bette" Ripp on Feb. 11, 1941, in Waunakee. After high school, he started as a machinist for Gisholt Machine Company, working with them for 33 years until it closed. During his time at Gisholt, he was involved in the organization of Steel Workers Local 1404, and was also involved with contract negotiations and grievance processes.

He then became a maintenance worker at the Madison College Downtown Education Center for 15 years. Upon his semi-retirement, he worked part-time as a custodian at Christ Presbyterian Church. His passion in his youth was fast pitch softball. He loved to play, and managed local teams that won many city championships. He was a fanatic Notre Dame football and Cubs fan. He loved caring for his lawn and growing and canning tomatoes for family and friends all through the neighborhood.

Edmund is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bette; four children, James (Lynn), Richard (Paula), Darlene (Jerry Johnson) and Susan Scanlon; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Farrell and Lois Nolan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and three sisters.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at Waunakee Manor, especially Paulyn Ripp, Dr. Albert Musa, Terri Patwell, GNP; the Internal Medicine Staff at Dean Clinic East, and the priests at St. Peter's and St. John's Waunakee.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 19 at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Monsignor Charles Schluter and Father Roger Nilles concelebrating. Burial will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.
