Lecture and Recital on Percussionist John Bergamo

    portrait of John BergamoMadison College music instructor Tim Patterson will be giving a lecture/recital on the inimitable and inventive western percussion works of world-renowned percussionist, John Bergamo in the Mitby Theater on Thursday, June 16 beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting approximately 75 minutes.

    The recital will feature performances of three of Bergamo's works:

    -Duets and Solos (marimba and vibraphone)

    -Three Pieces for the Winter Solstice (vibraphone solo)

    -Blanchard Canyon for 5 amplified suspended cymbals

    The lecture will trace the development of Bergamo's distinctly creative compositional style through the influences of teachers and interactions with composers and performers, while specifically looking at the three seminal works on the program that have helped define Bergamo's innovative composition style. This lecture will include a discussion on the extended techniques used in these pieces and examine the use of timbre as a compositional technique.
