Four judicial reporting students attended the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) annual meeting in Chicago through a generous sponsorship from the judicial reporting program’s long-time “partner,” the Wisconsin Court Reporters Association (WCRA). In addition to financial assistance to attend the NCRA convention, the WCRA provides the Madison College judicial reporting program with mentors for program students and special student seminars twice a year.
Attending the NCRA convention were Madison College judicial reporting students Nancy Harwood, Chelci Bryan, Regina Wittkowske, and Paula Kouba.
“My experience at the NCRA convention was amazing…it gave me the extra boost of confidence that I was searching for,” said Chelci Bryan.
“It’s hard to put into words how much it meant to me to be able to attend the convention,” Nancy Harwood shared. “After having spent the weekend with so many other court reporters from across the country, I feel much more a part of the community of court reporters.”
All four students cited the importance of being involved in a professional association such as NCRA and WCRA representing their respective future career. "Students should be involved in their professional associations because every opportunity you have to meet with those working in your own field is a learning experience,” Nancy Harwood observed. “I met official court reporters, freelance reporters, and broadcast captioners and loved hearing their experiences. It inspired me to keep forging ahead.”
The Madison College judicial reporting program faculty and students thank the Wisconsin Court Reporters Association for providing the incentives to make this experience possible.
