Dr. James Hood, the former chair of Madison Area Technical College's Protective Services program is being honored in Alabama.
George Wallace's "stand in the schoolhouse door" at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa was a key moment in the civil rights movement, which succeeded in integrating the institution despite the vow of the then-governor. But only a small plaque, easily missed, has marked the spot.
The Associated Press reports the university is now planning to build a plaza and clock tower to encourage more understanding of the events of that time. The plaza will be named for James Hood and Vivian Malone, the two black students Wallace unsuccessfully tried to block from enrolling.
