Former Assistant Director Alun Thomas Has Passed Away

    Alun C. Thomas, age 87, of Waupaca, formerly of Madison, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Theda Clark Medical Center.

    He was born in Mankato, Minn. on Aug. 28, 1923, to the late Griff and Rosina (Jones) Thomas. On Feb. 2, 1950, he married Eleanor Croswell. She preceded him in death on April 16, 2007. Alun was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was the Assistant Director of Madison Area Technical College for over 30 years, retiring in 1987.

    Alun was involved in numerous activities. He was named Volunteer of the Year in 1991 in Madison. He was a volunteer at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, in the wheel chair shop and woodworking shop, providing woodworking projects for the gift shop there. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in both Madison and Waupaca. He had been a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church and Wild Rose Presbyterian Church. Alun was also a tutor at the Chain Elementary School in Waupaca.

    He will be sadly missed by his daughters, Linda (Duane) Swanson of Sitka, Alaska, Gwendolyn (Neil) Young of Waupaca, Marcia (Tom) Nelson of Cottage Grove and Lisa Thomas (Randy) of Windsor; grandchildren, Heather (Brett), Erik (Chie), Rachel, Bryan, Theran (Nadia), Larissa (Jason), Sasha (Craig) and Melissa (Luke); great-grandchildren, Dylan, Brady, Alyssa, Kai, Thomas Alun and Aiya; a sister, Betty Rademacher of Mankato, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Joanne Thomas of Mankato, Minn. and Mary Ann (Ellis) Norman of Lake Crystal, Minn.; brother-in-law, John (Kathleen) Croswell of North Mankato, Minn.; and other relatives and friends.

    In addition to his wife and parents; he was preceded in death by brothers, Idwal (Anne) and Emlyn.
    The Funeral Service will be on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the MAPLE CREST FUNERAL HOME. The visitation will be on Thursday at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Highland Memory Garden in Madison. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
