Education: Is There an App for That? (Part 2)

Photo of RebeccaGuest blog by Rebecca Ryan, founder of Next Generation Consulting, who was a speaker at the College’s faculty and staff convocation on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

This piece is part two of a three-part blog series, “Education: Is there an app for that?” that based on her convocation address with the same title. You can view Rebecca’s slides or watch a convocation video, including a presentation by Dr. Bettsey Barhorst and Rebecca Ryan’s keynote address.

    Blog Part 2:
Yes, students learn when they work their rear ends off. (See Part One of this series.)

And one of the really exciting things about being in education right now is that we’re learning so much about how the brain works and how students learn.

What do we know about how students learn? Five things, all of them from research:
    1.  Failure
    2.  Working in groups
    3.  Thinking out loud
    4.  Tackling hard problems
    5.  Teaching others
