On Friday, November 5, the Madison College’s accounting program hosted the 5th annual high school accounting seminar. The seminar brought over 60 students from the four Madison high schools (East, West, LaFollette, and Memorial) and Middleton-Cross Plains to the Truax campus for a morning of career exploration, conversations regarding education options and a brief exposure to accounting software.
In addition to Madison College, Lakeland College and UW-Whitewater participated by having both faculty and students from their school’s accounting programs meet with the high school students.
The students were welcomed to Madison College by Turnia Bakken, Dean of the Center for Business and Applied Arts, and Ray Petkovsek, representing the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Professional accountants from CUNA Mutual, the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, the UW Athletic Department and the Baker Tilly CPA firm met with the students to give them exposure to the wide variety of career options within the accounting field.
Comments from the high school students and faculty indicate that the seminar was successful in fostering an interest in accounting careers.
