In our early history, much of our time was filled with creating structures and procedures that would influence future behavior. Our constitution created officer positions, some of which were based on the four hallmarks- scholarship, service, leadership, and fellowship. At our first general membership meeting nominees were solicited, officers elected, and a committee structure was outlined. Although our chapter received incredible support from the MATC District Board, administration, faculty, and the Student Life Office, there were hurtles. There was the continuing challenge of creating a flawless computer program that identifies all those who deserved an invitation letter. Money was a big obstacle, especially at the beginning. One of our big expenses was postage. In the pre-email days, a hard copy of a newsletter was sent to over two hundred members at least once a month. In addition we paid for all the invitation letters for new members. We also needed money to send people to conferences at the regional and national level. It seems like everything we wanted to do involved money. However, we did not want to have high dues that would keep people from joining nor did we want to spend most of our time in fund raising. So we tried to get some funding through the college's student activity fee. This put us in competition for money with other student organizations, among which was the athletic department. We successfully lobbied for student activity fee money and even acquired a position on the Student Activity Board that recommends a budget.

From the beginning, certain traits were apparent among our active members. They were very busy, sharp, industrious people who managed their time well. They did well in following through after they said they would do something. They liked staying on task and they enjoyed helping one another. Because members are recruited from every division, they are very diverse in interests. But diversity was also apparent in age and marital status. Our average age is about 29. Through Phi Theta Kappa, young single students were bonding with members who were parents and grandparents.

Through time, Beta Beta Psi became a highly respected organization. Members were being recruited by administrators to serve on a variety of college committees and represent MATC in community functions. Our active members have been student ambassadors, served on the Judiciary Committee, been graduation speakers, and one was even appointed to the governing MATC District Board. Some of our members have been involved in deciding winners of MATC Foundation Scholarships. Our officers have been invited to the executive mansion by the Governor and First Lady. We have frequently had members on the Judiciary Committee that focuses on student/faculty conflicts. Phi Theta Kappa was asked to play a major role in helping select faculty for the most distinguished teacher of the year award. We have continued to make this one of our college wide projects ever since.
